It took 15 years for this game to be ported to the Mac...
This game should have existed. Well I mean it does, and it did, and it could have. Half Life has a strange relationship on OS X and macOS. Allow me to elaborate on the history of Half-Life on Macand then and the end we'll cover how you can experience Half Life natively on a PowerPC Mac and modern Macs.

Installing isn't incredibly difficult if you have a virtual machine or Windows PC to install half life on. You need to do this so you can nab source folder from the PC install. I found I had to install Game of the year edition in Windows, and then go into the Half Life directory, and drag the source folder into my username/Library/Application Support/Xash3D

Bro just get a Blue and White G3. does it all man, and natively to boot.
I have a Power Mac G3 Blue and White, 1.1 Ghz PowerPC G3 CPU (Powerlogix), 1 GB Ram, Sonnet SATA Card, Sonnet USB 2.0 / Firewire Card, Gigabit Ethernet, Radeon 9250 PCI Card, 500 GB Samsung Boot SSD, 1 TB WD Velociraptor, Lite On Blu Ray Burner for absolutely no reason. Its a powerful Mac. those upgrades wont be had nowadays unfortunately. But a stock G3 is good too.
@@digitalizeddeathanother tower desktop takes up a lot of space and it works fine in OS 9 now and the G3s are a lot slower than what I have. I had a G3 450 as the first computer I ever bought with my own money but I don’t miss it.
@@digitalizeddeaththose cpu upgrades are sadly rare now. My whole want for a dual 1.4 GHz g4 was based on the rarity of anything faster.
I tried to run Paladins. It worked at first, but then when the match starts it goes back to main menu
One of the drives usb outputs was used to run and power the WiFi accessory antenna. Also not built in to the 360 console
My problem is that ratchet and clank collection is running super slow. Any help with that?
Check the wiki, I’d also try other games. If you’re on an old computer it might be too demanding
Can you play online on these emulators?

This is the most confusing video I’ve ever seen, you skip the steps and don’t explain nothing
What steps did I skip? Xbox emulation is a pain because of the format support
Tomb raider games don’t work :( or am I doing sth. Wrong ?
Y'know the 2013 reboot series has official Mac ports right? The very old ones would need crossover as they are not DX11+
Greetings. When I check in the setup menu for whisky, I don't see gptk. I see Whiskywine. How do I install gptk2 into whisky.

Can someone help me with an error I'm getiting? I followed the instruction to a T, however, VLC is giving me this error. (Blu-Ray error: This Blu-Ray Disc needs a library for AACS decoding, and your systems does not have it.) However, I have installed the AACS. Now I opened the VLC messages to see what specific message was being sent to the log as I tried to open the Blu-Ray again. This time I received a bit more specific info which states: -Disc is using AACS no access_demux modules matched -looking for access module matching "bluray": 24 candidates -no access modules matched -dead input
I bought about 30 movies and player when it was on its way out for about $200. Than sold it after only a month for $100 or so because I came to my sense and realize I only need 1 format.
In summary - Apple DGAF. And we should stop giving them our money. Great video!
Ugh. Mine is using 1.4 terabytes
6:08 did you really have to get political with this at all?
It’s a joke, if not made clear by the gratuitous edits and sound effects. Besides, slave and master doesn’t accurately describe the relationship between the drives either. I hardly consider it a spicy take to make a slavery = bad statement.
@@dmug So now you’re joking about slavery?
@@MathewMaher That it's bad? Yes.
@@dmug This was the first time I’ve watched one of your videos and my take away was this: I’m unprepared by not having a mouse, slavery is funny, and let’s put computers outside for B-roll for no good reason. If that’s what the rest of you content is like, then I won’t like, subscribe or ding any bells.
@@MathewMaher That's fine. If you didn't like the video, then I wouldn't ask you watch others as it'd be a waste of your time.
I don't know if it's just me, my hardware, or my OS, but I don't think most things run particularly well through WINE/Proton. For me, even though I'm not on a Mac, I still use Xash to play Half-Life and it works perfectly as far as I can tell. Now, that's not to say that everything runs poorly through WINE, as I do run a few Unreal 1 based games, and Unreal 1 itself, that way and they work perfectly, but Half-Life and a few other games just lag that way. Another instance is to play Doom 3 I use dhewm.
Can you run a bench mark with the Apple Radeon Pro W5700X MPX Module as well?
Sorry, I don’t have one but the benchmarks are going to be that of it 5700 XT, perhaps a percentage point or two lower based on what I’ve seen. The w5700x has quieter cooling and doesn’t come either the factory overclocks like many the 5700 xt frequently did. The 6600 xt is about 10% faster than the 5700 XT and by extension the w5700x.
My 2009 white plastic Macbook runs Sonoma and I use it daily.
No. And I will not listen to anyone who claims otherwise. 16gb is minimal. 32gb is, for me, mandatory. I will NOT buy anything with less. Period. Oh, and I use it...many times well above 18gb, and I also have a RAM disk installed that uses up even more to optimize my browser cache and profile. I sure as hell am not managing to do that with 8gb! It makes me laugh to even type it, it is such a pathetic number.
I’m not sure if this was directed at me but the conclusion here was “you can get away with it but you shouldn’t buy an 8 GB of ram Mac” as it puts wear and tear on the SSD.
@@dmug It was not directed at you. Sorry I did not make that clear. There are a LOT of people trying to make excuses for this computer.
No worries, I had one or two people think that I was defending Apple when just explaining how they are able to get away with it.
should I delete Mac Steam Games? if I install window 10 version steam?
Gothic 1 working marvelous. Macbook Air M2. A little heat, but it works suprisingly good for an emulation
It kind of sounds like your biggest issue with this machine is its nomenclature. If you think of it as a Mac Studio, which is basically what it is, then maybe your position might change. Unlike a Mac Studio though you can upgrade the CPU, Ram, GPU, and internal storage. Here we are ten plus years later, and we have lost all of those vital features. You basically set up the machine to its worst possible state for your use case. Yes you should have employed a better internal storage. But you also had the 12 core CPU which has the slowest single core speed, and you were using the weakest GPU to do the most intensive GPU tasks. Had you used this computer say as an audio work station it is likely you would have been very pleased with its performance. If you need to drive a 4K display from one of these machines then an external expansion chassis is one way to get there. The 2013 has a lot of connectivity available (also known as expansion ability), and your cable mess is made more unsightly because of USER ERROR. That is the back of the computer, not the front! Turn it around and drape your cables behind your desk. The 2013 is a beautiful design, more like Darth Vader's helmet than that other term lazy people have employed. It is unfortunate that third part video cards never came out for it, as this would likely have increased the machines viability. Had this machine sported ARM processors people would still be singing praises. Sadly it was strapped with Intel, and that limited its possibilities.
My biggest issue is it was an overpriced machine that didn't feature PCIe slots. I think my value set is likely different than people who love this machine. As the author of the Definitive Mac Pro Upgrade guide series, it shouldn't be a shocker I had a strong bias against this computer for it's inferiority compared to the ol' cheesegrater. They missed the mark with this design, as the Mac Pro should have been the most boring computer Apple made, just toss some Xeons in a box with PCIe slots and call it a day. Looks are arbitrary when you're trying to get work done. I'd buy a Mac Pro with a scruffed beige 1990s HP case if delivered a fully modular design again. Does this make me correct? Not really but I have a very _strong_ suspicion I represented the wants and desires of the average Mac Pro buyer. As far as audio goes, I recorded two albums with a Mac Pro 2008, and the Mac Pro 2013 under load was as loud if not louder than my Mac Pro 2008. It certainly has more CPU horsepower than my 2008 but lacked the storage options. Fortunately, I'm not a protools guy, thus a Mac Pro 2013 would have done a fine job, but I'd been forced to use external media. The 12-Core is the faster CPU overall you're trading 28% clockspeed for a 3x the core count. The Turboboost on the base 4-core is only 3.9 Ghz, a 5% uplift vs the nearly 25% uplift for the 12-Core. For the work I was trying to do it, it's still the best option as the performance scales a lot better than say, the Mac Pro 2019 where you get only about 30-40% speed increase from from the 16-Core to 28-Core in multicore vs the Mac Pro 2013 going roughly 225% from 4 to 16 Core. As far as the GPU, the D700s only offer roughly a 35% speed bump. As much as I'd liked to experience the D700s, realistically it wouldn't have drastically improved my opinion. It's a beautiful computer but unworthy of the pro name. I did make a follow up video where I compared it to a Mac Mini M1 as they're roughly the same price. ua-cam.com/video/Gza7ebuT7DA/v-deo.html
@@dmug The philosophy of this machine is different, and you really have to view it that way. You can't expect a dog to be a cat, or a cat to be a dog, and if you do well you are just going to disappoint yourself, and that is why you are so disappointed. This is not a machine with slots. It is much more like the original Macs, before the Mac II. If you look at it this way it has massive expansion. If you think back to Apple II days people said that the 8-bit Ataris didn't have expansion, but that was incorrect, they had their daisy chainable serial port. It is a different philosophy, neither is wrong, they are just different. The 2013 has a massive amount of ports on the back, so to say it doesn't have expansion is really false. You can say it doesn't have slots, but it has lots of expansion. For audio a lot of people have used external drives. Many even prefer to work this way. A client can come into your studio, bring their drive. Work, and then take their drive when they go. This isn't a negative unless you want it to be so. The 12 core is only faster if the software supports it, and that's not always, or even often the case with Intel machines. Yes it will be faster in benchmarks, but often the 4 core machine could beat the 12 core in a healthy number of daily efforts. The ARM Macs are fantastic. It shows us where the PPC could have gone if IBM and Moto didn't give up on it. And I wouldn't really suggest someone get an Intel Mac these days unless they had a reason, like say they wanted to run GDB. Although you could instal Lima on your ARM Mac, and SSH into GDB functionality that way too. But I can imagine some folks wanting to run some Intel apps, and for them an Intel Mac, and the 2013 would be a very nice machine. But it is really difficult to compete with the ARM Macs. And if you think about it there really isn't an ARM Mac available where you can use slots. Yeah they made one, but can you put anything that you really want into one of those slots? No GPUs, and what else could go in there that would be important today? An Intel card so that you could run CP/M? :P
My smart side is telling me to get the mini because of the performance... But my weak side is begging to get the pro because of it's design and looks lol 😭

I am planning on getting a MacBook hopefully in the near future. I’m glad I found this video! I am happy to know I can have the option to play at least some of my Windows-only games on Mac. (Checked the list, none of the games I own are compatible, but still good to know I have a few more options). One question, though: say I were to have both the Mac version of Steam for playing the majority of my games, and the Windows version for playing Windows games, would they conflict with each other in any way?
Only if you try to run them together at the same time as Steam only lets you play one game at a time. GPTK2 will be released with macOS 15 Sequoia which will further expand compatibility. The best option though isn't Whisky, rather Crossover which uses WINE + GPTK (and will use GPTK2) for a much wider range of compatibility. Many online games will not work because of anti-cheat software.

I have a problem, when I turn my MacBook on and load into Mac OS sanoma, it works but after a few seconds, the wallpaper disappears and turns to a blank white background and I can't change the wallpaper, also wifi won't work, like non of the networks appear, when I open Open Core Legacy Patcher and they to do the Post Install fix or whatever it's called, it just says "unsupported Host OS. What do I do? Also I'm using a 2016 MacBook Pro
its fucked up that valve back then had a stance for mac like this, but they were kinda proven right though when they did support macOS back in 2010 only to be fucked apple's horrible business practices (like steam link for iOS) and compatibility standards like dropping 32bit and only wanting to use their propietary Metal GPU API and dropping support for vulkan and openGL. i can totally see this coming from gabe who worked at Microsoft for Windows just not having a single ounce of respect for apple when back then they were doing everything to throw Microsoft windows under the bus going so far to call them copycat stealers and releasing the most egregious marketing to convince consumers that their products were just better than everything else at the time. still messed up that they dropped the ball on half-life for mac when it was finished for no reason than spite. considering HL1 was released for PS2 and didn't have any full modding features or online features that valve really wanted to planned for.
am i the only one that cant get Elden Ring to launch? its keeps getting halted saying the Easy Anti Cheat Module isnt found?
Many games are prohibited by the anti-cheat software, I'd check Mac Gaming Wiki or the Whisky Github page to see if there are any work arounds.
@@dmug thank you so much
Apple continues to change architecture, OS, CPU. They drop support for 32 bit software. They are to blame for being a company that only really makes phones.
Mac changes OS and processor architecture making everything either obsolete, non functional or just to expensive to maintain. Apple is at fault and will never change.
strange how clear cut and direct this video is THX big time !!!!!
Best game ever.
I wish I’d experienced when it was new, u don’t think played it until about 2008
How do i decompress the file? The option isnt showing
Decompress... what? If it's a .zip or .gz file, it should decompress by double clicking
Good afternoon. I've followed the instructions in your related video but you don't finish downloading the game stopped the first time at 10% and the second time at 20%. I have one in my possession one MacBook Air M3 Thanks
In 1996 I bought several commercial games for Linux. In 2024 I tried them again under Ubuntu 24.04 with Wayland. They still worked perfectly. And that is the reason why you will rarely find games on Mac. You have basically bought an massively overpriced Raspberry-Clone which is pretty good for Web and SOHO but nothing else. Oh, A Pi5 for €80 is actually also pretty good at these and has longer support too.
Half life 2 - didn't innovate. But Half life1 Did. (Still Remember) Neighbour with it. Just *Super Sayin*
